First time in Bahrain

A small island you can cross in an hour, with 5,000 years of history and a very good dinner scene. Here's the short version.

Arrival & visas

Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Bahrain International Airport, or apply online in advance through the government eVisa service. Check your own nationality before travelling.

Getting around

Taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the whole island; distances are short — airport to Manama is about 15 minutes. Car hire is easy and roads are well signposted.

Money

The Bahraini Dinar (BD) is the currency. Cards are accepted almost everywhere; keep a little cash for souq stalls and small cafés.

Emergencies

Dial 999 for police, ambulance or fire. Hospital listings here are informational only — always call 999 in an emergency.

Your first weekend

  1. 1.Morning: Bahrain Fort and its shoreline museum, then coffee in Muharraq's restored houses.
  2. 2.Afternoon: Bahrain National Museum, then the Manama Souq for spices, gold and karak tea.
  3. 3.Evening: dinner in Block 338, Adliya — street art, galleries and dozens of kitchens in a few blocks.
  4. 4.Next day: Al Dar Islands for a beach afternoon, or the Tree of Life and the desert at sunset.
